This is a recycled canvas of a painting I did several years ago that I was never really happy with however I couldn't bring myself to just toss the thing away. To prep the canvas for repainting I gave it a light sand and then used an old credit card to apply texture paste over the entire surface. I then applied antiquing medium and once dry used a credit card to scrape white paint loosely over the top. I painted the girl with acrylic paints and then used texture paste to mould the dress.<br />

<div style="text-align: left;">
I know that Christmas is over and everyone has packed away their tree, however it is a great time to get junky ornaments at a clearance price and repurpose them into something nicer.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
For this project I used the Tim Holtz Window and Window Box die to cut the frame from thick card stock which I painted with acrylics. I printed the Santa image (below) twice and used one for the background image and the other I cut away the background and used foam dots to layer him onto the background to give Santa some 'pop'. The little gem on the front was repurposed from a junky ornament.</div>

<br />
This project was taught by the fabulous <a href="http://www.christytomlinson.typepad.com/" target="_blank">Christy Tomlinson</a> via her monthly Art Society Club. This project taught us how to make our own canvas using burlap and plaster of paris to cover a piece of recycled cardboard. You can see that I started with a very thick piece of corrugated cardboard as my base.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/59492802@N04/16446865061" title="Plaster Angel by Morgan Faie, on Flickr"><img alt="Plaster Angel" height="800" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7309/16446865061_2b42eb99e1_c.jpg" width="450" /></a></div>
<br />
The dress form is also plaster wrapped around a cardboard base. I used pre-purchased plaster bandages and they are just fabulous. They become silky and buttery very quickly and are a dream to work with.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/59492802@N04/16446861941" title="Plaster Angel by Morgan Faie, on Flickr"><img alt="Plaster Angel" height="800" src="https://farm9.staticflickr.com/8609/16446861941_714a959a67_c.jpg" width="450" /></a></div>
<br />
The plaster strips start take about 15 minutes to start to harden, and a good day to dry thoroughly. I coloured mine with distress inks and gesso. The plaster sucked up a lot of the colour, and although it doesn't look like it, the dress has about 5 coats of colour added to it. Look at all that delicious texture!<br />
<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/59492802@N04/16260935998" title="Plaster Angel by Morgan Faie, on Flickr"><img alt="Plaster Angel" height="800" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7427/16260935998_8437b4e9d2_c.jpg" width="450" /></a>
</div>
<br />
<br />
The wings are cut from various scrapbook papers, tattered with a distressing tool and inked with distress inks. Each of the feathers are cut individually and glued down in layers to give dimension.
<br />
She is finished with a few pieces of hand dyed lace and ribbon with a metal heart taken from a recycled piece of dress jewellery.<br />

<br />
<br />
Rachel Rice was our fabulous instructor this week and she guided us through making a dream catcher using a vintage crochet doily and paper feathers on top of a collaged background. <br />
<br />
For my background I used a scan of an old text book my Mother used in the sixties when she was in highschool. It is old and stained and contains handwritten notes inside the covers. Throughout the lesson Rachel talked about how using the vintage doily connected her to the women that have come before us, and I felt using my Mother's old text book pages did the same thing.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/59492802@N04/16411651671" title="Stained Book by Morgan Faie, on Flickr"><img alt="Stained Book" height="431" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7360/16411651671_1b3440ccee.jpg" width="500" /></a>
</div>
<br />
<br />
I wanted to avoid the bulk in my journal so I used ink and pencil on top of the collage to create the dreamcatcher. I'm not sure it ended up being what I envisioned at the start, but I am happy to call this one done!<br />

<br />
Our guest teacher this week was <a href="https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1467683486" target="_blank">Patti Ballard </a> who presented a delightful ballerina on a tight rope painted over collage with the quotation "Courage Dear Heart".<br />
<br />
I adjusted the theme to suit me and changed the ballerina to be a full figured model rather than the traditional very thin girl. I am really noticing that there is little in the way of body positive messages and imagery out there and I want to change that!<br />

I just love Christy Thomlinson's artistic style, unlike mine it's so free and spontaneous. This project is inspired by her monthly Art Society Club.<br />
<br />
The tag is covered with burlap and plaster of paris. The dress form is a Tim Holtz die covered in book paper. The dress is made from strips of lace dipped in PVA glue, then dyed with distress ink and dry brushed with acrylic paint.Morganhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15197805885032372842noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9011076437613465489.post-51023928786536902352015-01-14T14:24:00.002-08:002015-01-31T15:06:42.450-08:00Life Book 2015 The Artful Wordsmith<div style="text-align: center;">

<br />
Our tutor this week is the fabulous Joanne Sharpe! I have always disliked the look of my own handwriting in journals, so I was thrilled to learn some new techniques that turn my own handwriting into letting.<br />
<br />
This piece was done in my Dylusions journal using a black Posca pen to outline and distress markers to colour. I think the next time I do a piece like this I will use a more vibrant medium than the distress markers, but overall I am ok with how this turned out.<br />
<br />
The quote "I live and love with my whole heart" is by Brene Brown, who is apparently my muse this year!<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
You can see the little speckles where the gesso didn't give 100% coverage, but I think I am ok with that!<br />

<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Continuing with Week 2 of Life Book 2015 with guest artist Roben-Marie Smith. The focus of her lesson was to create a quick tag using pre-printed art. I had four altered playing cards lying around doing nothing so I decided to use those on my tag.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
</div>
<span style="text-align: start;"><br /></span>
<br />

<span style="text-align: start;">
</span>
<br />
<br />
Each of the quotes is by Brene Brown and are words of comfort and courage to me. Her books on wholehearted living and letting go of perfectionism are guiding beacons.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/59492802@N04/15626701104" title="Quotes by Brene Brown - Tags by Morgan Faie, on Flickr"><img alt="Quotes by Brene Brown - Tags" height="500" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7522/15626701104_a21224022c.jpg" width="277" /></a></div>
<br />
The tags were cut using a Tim Holtz die, and then covered in book paper. I used Red Brick Distress Ink to colour each tag and splattered water to create the texture.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/59492802@N04/16223194036" title="Quotes by Brene Brown - Tags by Morgan Faie, on Flickr"><img alt="Quotes by Brene Brown - Tags" height="500" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7525/16223194036_dbc6e7c509.jpg" width="275" /></a>
</div>
<br />
The altered playing cards and words were attached with gel medium, and then splattered with black acrylic paint.<br />
<br />
<br />

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I chose the tag that had the message I most needed to hear and incorporated that into my Life Book layout.<br />

<br />
Week 2 of Life Book introduces a fun project called the 'joy jar'. The idea is to keep the jar somewhere prominant and every time something joyous happens write it down on a slip of paper and pop it into the jar. Continue to fill the jar throughout the year, then on New Years Eve open it up and reminisce about all the joyful things that happened throughout the year.<br />
<br />
The tutorial showcased a collaged jar, but I wanted my jar to remain transparent so that you could see the scraps of paper inside as it fills up. I used copic markers to colour the jar in blues and greens and then spritzed it with isopropyl alcohol to get the mottled effect. I really loved the bubbly effect this technique created. The copic markers are alcohol based, once dry they won't smear or smudge. I also added a sprinkling of fairy dust (glitter).<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/59492802@N04/16225468331" title="Joy Jar by Morgan Faie, on Flickr"><img alt="Joy Jar" height="800" src="https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7559/16225468331_9dcb6957c0_c.jpg" width="450" /></a></div>
<br />
The 'joy' tag is a wooden ornament I bought at a thrift shop a few years ago, sprayed with ink and then rubbed with iridescent medium to give it some shimmer. This was a really simple project, but I think the end result was really special! Have yourselves a joy filled day!<br />

<br />
It is my favourite time of the year! <a href="http://www.willowing.org/life-book-2015/" target="_blank">Life Book 2015</a> has just begun and I still have eight weeks before semester starts so I get to relax and enjoy creating. This is my third year joining Tamara Laporte for her year long art journalling course. It is by far the best value art course available, 52 lessons throughout the year at less than $3.00 a week.<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
The first lesson from LB2015 is to create a 'beacon of light', an artistic/spiritual guide for the year. I used dictionary paper to create the dress on my girl and my intention for the year is to let go of the need to be perfect. This is embodied by the heart on the dress which is featured on the cover of the Brene Brown book "The Gifts Of Imperfection".<br />
<br />
After creating the pencil sketch the page was primed with clear gesso and then painted using a combination of Neocolor II watercolour crayons, acrylic paints and Tim Holtz Distress Inks and Markers. A little sprinkle of pixie dust (aka glitter) and she really came to life!<br />
<br />

<br />
Six weeks of 2014 have already flown by! I remember thinking how awesome it was that I had 6 whole weeks to do nothing but paint and play and now I have two more weeks and I am back to school!<br />
<br />
This week's lesson was with Tamara LaPorte where she showed us how to do a side profile potrait and taught us some new techniques with ink sprays. My ink play didn't turn out how I wanted it to, but I am happy with the effect that I got.<br />
<br />
I loved the portrait style. I was surprised at how quickly I was able to put my brush down and feel like she was finished. Although Tamara spent a lot more time to achieve a stronger sense of shadow and highlights, I was content with the very minimal, soft effect that I created after very few brush strokes. I also love how the speckles of the ink spray have come through to look like freckles!<br />
<br />
In her hair is a celebration of our positive qualities. Still not thrilled about my handwriting but happier with this attempt at lettering than the last page.Morganhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15197805885032372842noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9011076437613465489.post-87543076115348483222014-02-02T01:51:00.000-08:002014-02-02T03:43:51.535-08:00Life Book 2014 - Sugar Sugar<div style="text-align: center;">

Week 5 of Life Book 2014 is with Marieke Blokland. Her theme was all things sweet! Candy, chocolate, cakes and lollipops with the thought being that these represent the sweet things in your life. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I went in a slightly different direction and used my page to highlight the struggle between making the right dietary choices, and the promise that one day the right choice will also be the easy choice. I wish I liked my handwriting more!</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Week 4 of Life Book 2014 is with Kelly Hoernig. She tasked <u>u</u>s with creating a mixed media piece incorporating three things that we love and if possible including our word and colour for the year. The three things I chose were comic books, pop art and quotes by famous people.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I was really happy with how this piece came together. I got to incorporate my word for the year (forgiveness) and my colour (orange). I used sprays to give the pixelated/printed look that Roy Lichtenstein is so famous for (called Ben-Day dots) and amplified that further with over sized white dots to add contrast and interest.</div>

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/59492802@N04/12109192634/" title="Altered Book by Morgan Faie, on Flickr"><img alt="Altered Book" src="http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5522/12109192634_c84cfa8ec9_z.jpg" height="640" width="531" /></a> </div>
<br />
I bought this fabulous digital stamp from Mo Manning titled "<a href="http://www.mosdigitalpencil.com/trying-to-read/" target="_blank">Trying to Read</a>" just for the sheer joy of colouring it in, and it was after it was finished I wondered what on earth I was going to do with such a large scale image. Then like a smack upside the head inspiration came and I knew it was meant to be put into an altered book!<br />
<br />
The image itself is printed onto watercolour paper and I used Distress Markers and a Tombow Blender pen. It takes several <b>layers</b> of colour to build up the shadows and even then it's still quite soft, but I love that about watercolour. I have also added a <b>layer</b> of iridescent water colour to the bottle, glass and fireflies.<br />
<br />
To make the book itself I cut a rectangle out of the hard cover and using a ruler and sharp exacto knife I cut a criss cross through several <b>layers</b> of the pages at once. I then unceremoniously ripped these out which creates the fantastic jagged edge frame. Once I had torn through about half the book to get the depth of <b>layering</b> that I wanted I placed a sheet of plastic between the pages where I wanted the image to go and used Mod Podge to adhere the inner torn edges and the outer page edges together. When dry I brushed gold paint on the edges.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/59492802@N04/12109182294/" title="Altered Book by Morgan Faie, on Flickr"><img alt="Altered Book" src="http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5506/12109182294_d146ea490b.jpg" height="334" width="500" /></a>
</div>
<br />
The front <b>layer</b> of the book is decorated with a branch made from paper ribbon, some silk flowers, a bit of oakmoss and some plastic toadstools torn from an unloved and gaudy Christmas decoration.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/59492802@N04/12109187344/" title="Altered Book by Morgan Faie, on Flickr"><img alt="Altered Book" src="http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5530/12109187344_31c05910e0_z.jpg" height="640" width="503" /></a>
</div>
<br />
When all of those layers were dry I removed the sheet of plastic and slipped the finished image into the middle of the book and sealed it shut with one final layer of Mod Podge. Doing it this way meant that none of the hot glue, paint or adhesive accidentally got on my precious image.<br />
<br />
This book has picture hangers on the back so it can be hung on the wall, but it could also easily be displayed on a book stand. I enjoyed this so much am already thinking about my next one!<br />

<div style="text-align: justify;">
This is the first project for Life Book 2014, the Inner Artist Guardian. She is the protector of my artistic freedom and is there to protect me from my inner critic. Through a guided meditation we were also led to discover our colour for the year. I was very surprised to find my colour was orange as it's not a colour I ever really use, nor wear. I was not at all surprised to discover that my word for the year is forgiveness!</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
This year for Life Book I decided to do all my work in a Strathmore Mixed Media journal. The page is prepped with gesso and then drawn with graphite and coloured with Caran d'Ache watercolour crayons. The above is a scan of the original, for the life of me I could not photograph it without the reflective elements taking over!</div>

Week 14 of Life Book 2013 is with Tamara Laporte, and she encouraged us to get a little quirky and create some funky little birds. I really loved this project, and it ended up being a portrait of myself and my partner in a little love nest, see how where their beaks touch it forms a heart? The nest itself is made from the printed lyrics from a song by the Dixie Chicks called Easy Silence. See what I did there... birds, nest, chicks!Morganhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15197805885032372842noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9011076437613465489.post-37356418162760509982013-12-30T20:45:00.000-08:002013-12-30T20:45:09.293-08:00High School Memories Begin SoonWow, New Years Eve already! I spent all of this year focused on my own studies and health. This month I am proud to say that I have completed my Diploma of Counselling and have applied to University to continue forward with a Bachelor of Health Sciences. This gives me a few precious months to relax and get some crafting done!<br />

<br />
At the end of my school year I completed a project in anticipation of my son starting his first year at high school. The pattern for this project comes from the talented Kathy Orta and is called <a href="http://shop.paperphenomenon.com/Scrapbook-Box-Set-A-Year-in-Review-Season-Change-003.htm" target="_blank">A Year In Review</a>.<br />

<br />
<br />
This is a gorgeous pattern, creating a HUGE album that has plenty of pockets and large areas for big photos, school certificates and awards.<br />

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Week 9 of Life Book 2013 is with Danita, and she taught us a simple technique for painting over a printed image, such as an image out of a magazine. I chose an image of Drew Barrymore and was quite pleased when hubby immediately recognized her! I love this technique. When you look at the painting you can't tell there is an image undernearth, which makes this a fantastic way to incorporate faces and people into art journals without feeling self conscious about your skill level.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br />
Greetings again! Week 8 of Life Book 2013 is done with the marvelously talented Jane Davenport. This is the most challenging lesson I have done to date, both emotionally and technically. 'Stumpification' occurs when you trace around a photo of person, typically the tracing results in a 'stumpy' version of that person. By using the technique demonstrated we are taught how to 'unstumpify' the tracing. The example Jane did took an ordinary photo and she created a very lithe and sexy fashion model, which is of little surprise as Jane has a background in the fashion industry. The technique of 'unstumpification' is essentially using tracing and
illustration to do on paper what magazines do in photoshop to make a
woman 'more attractive'.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I choked. With the average woman being a size 12, and with so many women on constant diets, so many women with eating disorders, so many women who hate their bodies and struggle with poor self esteem, I could not bring myself to be a part of that and call it art. I know it's seemingly a small thing but we all have our lines I suppose and this one crossed mine. Further, this lesson was about bravery, and I just couldn't reconcile what seemed to be two completely polar opposite ideals.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I did try the unstumpification technique using photographs of plus size models, but it was still elongating them, smoothing out their curves, essentially making them thinner. In the end I used a plus size croquis, which is a line drawing used in the fashion illustration as a base for drawing clothing onto the human form. The only unstumping I did was to create a slightly longer neckline to allow for the additional of all that hair.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I created the comic book cover in Publisher, printed it out on heavy weight paper and then transferred the croquis using wax transfer paper. I decided to keep it monochrome and used a single shade of brown to keep with a sepia style look. It took two frustrating weeks to create the final version and by the end I was so annoyed with my efforts that I gave up on doing hands and faces, so my comic book heroine is wearing a mask! I am so glad this one is done.</div>

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/59492802@N04/8588840992/" title="New Blooms by Morgan Faie, on Flickr"><img alt="New Blooms" height="500" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8103/8588840992_c0c95e43fd.jpg" width="354" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br />
This week's lesson is New Blooms taught by the fabulous Christy Tomlinson. The message of this lesson is to learn from flowers, to take what we have learned in the past (the good and the bad) and to use that to grow anew.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Last year someone told me a secret that was so painful and profane that it left me changed forever. There's a scar on my soul that will never disappear and it's not something I can ever divulge, not even in my art diary. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
So how do I express that? The torn paper represents how I felt utterly ripped in two, and the splatters are there for the tears that felt like they would never end. I visualized all that pain and heartache, all that negativity and 'crap' as compost, fertile ground in which to plant a new seed, from which has emerged a new way of looking at the world. One that is less black and white, less judgmental. One that is perfectly captured with the words of Rumi:-</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><i>Out beyond ideas </i></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><i>of wrong doing, </i></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><i>and right doing, </i></span><br />
<span style="font-size: large;"><i>there is a field.</i></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-size: large;"><i>I will meet you there.</i></span></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/59492802@N04/8587741301/" title="New Blooms by Morgan Faie, on Flickr"><img alt="New Blooms" height="500" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8530/8587741301_0a66d25aea.jpg" width="335" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br />
Christie taught us a fabulous technique for making flowers from tin foil. I didn't want the silver of the tin foil showing through, so I covered the foil with gold leaf before applying patterned rice paper and shredded gold cellophane. I then used my Tattered Floral die to cut out the flowers. Because the base is tin foil they are completely mouldable adding outstanding dimension.<br />
<br />
The patterned papers in the background are by Kaisercraft and I have used Distress Inks to add texture. This is also my first attempt at hand lettering!<br />
