Six Inch Crochet Blanket Sampler - Dahlia

Dahlia

Technique: Crochet

Materials:
8 ply yarn in 3 colours

Tools:
4mm crochet hook

Finished Size:
6 inches

This is another of the blocks from Jan Eaton's book, I quite like this one, was quick and easy to put together.

It's funny when I started the year blogging I did so with a new years resolution to daily creativity and I used the blog simply as a record of that.  I had no followers, I just used the blog as a daily journal.  Now that I have followers I feel a little embarrased some days, most of you probably don't care in the least that I made a crochet block for a blankie!

Six Inch Crochet Blanket Sampler - Diamond In A Square

Diamond In A Square

Technique: Crochet

Materials:
8 ply yarn in 3 colours

Tools:
4mm crochet hook

Finished Size:
6 inches

This is another of the blocks from Jan Eaton's book, and this one only took a minor adjustment to get it to a uniform 6" in size. In the original pattern the 6th row is single crochet, to get the block to the correct size I had to do mine as a row of double crochet.

Six Inch Crochet Blanket Sampler - Catherine Wheel

Catherine Wheel

Technique: Crochet

Materials:
8 ply yarn in 3 colours

Tools:
4mm crochet hook

Finished Size:
6 inches

This is another of the blocks from Jan Eaton's book, and yet another pattern that took quite a bit of fiddling and fussing to get a uniform 6" in size.  Next time I am picking one block and making an entire blanket with the one design, that way I know without any fuss that all the blocks will be the same size!

Time to start blocking these, after which I will take more photo's, they will look so much prettier when they are actually square :o)

This week I discovered puppies like to play with wool every bit as much as kittens do!

Six Inch Crochet Blanket Sampler - Granny in Chains

Granny in Chains

Technique: Crochet

Materials:
8 ply yarn in 3 colours

Tools:
4mm crochet hook

Finished Size:
6 inches

I've been working with Jan Eaton's patterns, which are all meant to be a uniform 6" in size and are not, which has (by necessity) taught me how to make little tweaks here and there to get right.  This led me to trying other patterns to see if I could adapt them.  The following was originally an 8" block that I have adapted to fit the 6" size I need for my sampler.  I chose the name Granny in Chains, because it is essentially a granny square in both the centre and the edges with two rounds of chain stitches in the middle.

Round 1:  With size G (4mm) hook, ch 4, 2 dc in rth ch from hook (first 3 chs count as first dc), ch 2, [3 dc in same ch, ch 2] 3 times, slip stitch into 3rd chain of beg ch-3.  Fasten off.

Round 2:  Join next colour in any ch sp, ch 3 (counts as first dc), (2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in same ch sp (corner), ch 1, [(3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in next ch sp (corner), ch 1] around, join in 3rd chain of beg ch-3.  Fasten off.

Round 3:  Join next colour in any ch-2 sp, ch 3 (counts as first dc), (2 dc, ch 2, 3dc) in same ch sp, ch 1, *3 dc in next ch sp, ch 1**, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in next ch sp, ch 1, rep from * around, ending last rep at **, join in 3rd ch of beg ch-3.  Fasten off.

Round 4:  Join next colour with sc in any corner ch sp, ch 5, sc in same ch sp, *[ch 5, sc in next ch sp] twice**, ch 5, (sc, ch 5, sc) in corner ch sp, rep from * around, ending last rep at **, ch 2, join with dc in beg sc forming last ch sp.

Round 5: Ch 1, sc in this ch sp, ch 1, *9 dc in corner ch sp, ch 1, sc in next ch sp**, [ch 5, sc in next ch sp] twice, ch 1, rep from * around, ending last rep at **, ch 5, sc in next ch sp, ch 2, join with dc in beg sc forming last ch sp.

Round 6:  Ch 1, sc in this ch sp, *ch 6, sk next ch sp and next st, sc in next st, ch 6, sk next 2 sts, (sc, ch 6, sc) in next st, ch 6, sk next 2 sts, sc in next st, ch 6, sk next st and next ch sp, sc in next ch sp, ch 6**, sc in next ch sp, rep from * around, ending last rep at **, join with sl st in beg sc.  Fasten off.

Round 7:  Join 3rd colour with sl st in any corner ch-5 sp, ch 3 (counts as first dc), (2 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in same ch sp, * ch 1, [3 dc in next ch sp, ch 1] 5 times**, (3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in next corner ch sp, rep from * around, ending last rep at **, join in 3rd chain of beg ch-3.  Fasten off.

I think this makes around 20 blocks now, halfway to a blankie!

Six Inch Crochet Blanket Sampler - Solid Square

Solid Square

Technique: Crochet

Materials:
8 ply yarn in 3 colours

Tools:
4mm crochet hook

Finished Size:
6 inches

The original pattern comes from the book 200 Square Crochet Blocks by Jan Eaton. I have been regularly making one per week, with the goal that by the end of the year I will have enough to put together a blanket.  This block was a very simple construction, but like many of the patterns in the book (despite the claim that they are all six inches and totally interchangeable), it required an extra row to give it the correct number of stitches to make it a 6" square.

Six Inch Crochet Blanket Sampler - Spinner

Spinner

Technique: Crochet

Materials:

Finished Size:
6 inches

The original pattern comes from the book 200 Square Crochet Blocks by Jan Eaton. I have been regularly making one per week, with the goal that by the end of the year I will have enough to put together a blanket.  This block came together pretty easily, which unfortunately cannot be said for all of Ms Eaton's patterns, either I am terrible at crochet or her patterns are rife with errors, and many take a lot of adjustments to get a uniform 6" in size.

Six Inch Crochet Blanket Sampler - Tic Tac Toe

Tic Tac Toe

Technique: Crochet

Materials:
8 ply yarn in 3 colours

Tools:
4mm crochet hook

Finished Size:
6 inches

The original pattern was designed by Bonnie Pierce and can be found here. I found that the block size was not 6" at all, so I made some alterations. The pattern I used looks like this:

Row 1:  Using first colour, ch 12. Dc in 6th ch from hook, (ch 1, skip 1,dc 1) 3 times. (4 ch 1 sps) ch 4, turn (counts as dc, ch 1 on next row)

Rows 2-4:  dc in next dc, (ch 1, dc in next dc) 2 times, ch 1, dc in 3rd ch of ch 4, ch 4 turn FO color B at the end of row 4, do not ch 4. Do not turn.

Round 5: switch to second colour, work in corner (2sc, ch 1, 2 sc), (2sc in next sp) twice, work corner. Join w/ sl st.

Round 6:  sl st in next st, and in corner ch 1 sp, (ch 3, dc, ch 2, 2dc) in corner, work 8 dc across to corner (2dc, ch 2, 2 dc) Join w/ sl st FO

Round 7:  switch to third colour, join in corner, (ch 3, dc, ch 2, 2dc), (ch 1, sk 1, dc) 6 times, ch 1, work corner (2dc, ch 2, 2dc) cont. around, join w/ sl st

Round 8:  sl st to corner, 3 sc in corner, sc in each st and sp (17 sc), corner 3sc. Continue around. FO

Round 9:  with first colour, join in corner, work [2dc, ch 1, 2dc] in corner st, work 19 dc across

Round 10: sl st to corner, dc in each dc, 6 dc in each corner

Finish off and weave in all ends.

Six Inch Crochet Blanket Sampler - Traditional Granny

Granny Traditional

Technique: Crochet

Materials:
8 ply (sports or medium weight) yarn of choice

Tools:
4mm hook

Finished Size:
6 inches

I was taught to do the basic granny square when I was quite young. Of course after not doing any crochet for years I totally forgot how to do one again, but it is one of the most basic crochet patterns and easily picked up again.

The great thing about the granny square is that you can finish one off pretty quickly, and they are very portable making it ideal as a travel project.  Throughout the year I will be doing sampler squares for different granny squares and then constructing them together in one throw.

The written pattern for a granny square makes it looks a lot more complicated than it is.  The granny is a simple round of three double crochet shells separated by two chains at corners, and one chain on straights.

Join with slip stitch unless otherwise noted.  Chain 2 at the beginning of each row or round counts as first DC.

Foundation Ring:  Ch4, slp st into first chain to form a ring, ch 2 (counts as first dc), 2 dc in ring, [ch 2, 3 dc in ring] 3 times, ch 2, join

Rnd 1:  Slp st in each of next 2 dc, slp st in next chain space, ch 2, (2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in same ch space, ch 1, [(3dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in next ch sp, ch 1] around, join in second ch of beginning ch 2.

Rnd 2:  Slp st in each of next 2 dc, slp st in next chain space, ch 2, (2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in same ch space, *ch 1, 3 dc in next ch 1 sp, ch 1 **, (3dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in next ch 2 sp, rep from * around ending last repeat at **, join in second ch of beginning ch 2.

Rnd 3: Slp st in each of next 2 dc, slp st in next chain space, ch 2, (2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in same ch space, ch 1, *[3 dc in next ch 1 sp, ch 1} twice**, (3dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in next ch 2 sp, ch 1, rep from * around ending last repeat at **, join in second ch of beginning ch 2.

Rnd 4: Slp st in each of next 2 dc, slp st in next chain space, ch 2, (2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in same ch space, ch 1, *[3 dc in next ch 1 sp, ch 1} three times**, (3dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in next ch 2 sp, ch 1, rep from * around ending last repeat at **, join in second ch of beginning ch 2.

Rnd 5: Slp st in each of next 2 dc, slp st in next chain space, ch 2, (2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in same ch space, ch 1, *[3 dc in next ch 1 sp, ch 1} four times times**, (3dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in next ch 2 sp, ch 1, rep from * around ending last repeat at **, join in second ch of beginning ch 2.

Continue adding rounds until the square is the desired size.
